Even the evenings of late have been muggy, stultifying, and broiling, but things never seem to change in our area's recording facilities and rehearsal halls, where musicians gather for CD and demo recording and rehearsal s. Studio News brings you inside the walls of these businesses to bring you the latest news about who is doing what.

Opening Studio News this month is a studio new to our listings: Tree House Studios in North Massapequa, where Deb reported they are working on recording projects for the following artists this month: Judith Zweiman, Debra Lynne, Roger Silverberg, and Stuart Markus.

It seems major artists are always dropping by Sabella Studios in Roslyn Heights. During June, Richie Cannata stopped by to lay down saxophone tracks for an upcoming Johnny Thunders tribute album. Cannata is best known for playing sax for Billy Joel and The Beach Boys, and has worked with has worked Elton John, Rick James, and Gregg Allman. In this issue's photo, studio head Jim Sabella and engineer Abhita Austin hang out with Cannata, producer Steve Punk, and drummer Mike Mulieri.

Local stuff: The new album by the Long Island-based Battle Bratt, entitled Battle Bratt II: Forged In Steel, was produced by the band's Mato Aghetti and Chris Laybourne. The album was recorded at Laybourne's Coop Studios in the South Shore (Laybourne is known as "Crispy Chicken" when he plays sax … get it?) … Another artist who has recorded at Coop, Matt Cutillo, has tracks available from his Coop sessions available for purchase on his website, mattcutillo.com … Lady Fantastic's Paper on the national indie No Milk Records will be released September 6. The album was recorded at VuDu Studios in Freeport (vudustudios.com) … Several artists associated with Huntington's Paradiddle Records have locals shows coming up, including The Little Wilson Band at Northport Park on August 23. Big news coming from Patchogue: One of the most respected and popular recording facilities in Long Island is undergoing a name change: Suffolk Recording Studios is the new name for what previously was known as Natural Sound Studios. Dan at Suffolk reported more information will be released as it becomes available; in the meantime, you can call the studio at (631) 289-9818.

More from Suffolk Recording Studios: “We recently welcomed Buttered Soul to our studio,” reported Dan of the full-service facility. "The guys have recently checked in to record a CD's worth of tunes. The band, from eastern Long Island, features bass, drums, keys, guitar, sax, trumpet, and vocals. Many of the songs they are recording were performed during the band's performance at the recent Riverhead Blues Festival. They will be laying down tracks for the next few weeks. Also in to record recently were The GDR Band and Lonesome Dan & The Curmudgeons."

Things have been busy throughout the first half of summer at The MRE Studios in Merrick, as Rita and staff have been working with artists in every type of music, including The Mini Rockerz (a Kiss tribute act recently signed to Universal), Spontaneous Combustion, Eric Bonilla, Booths Edge, Joe Piket, and a host of others. New is Ultimate Sound Studio, a rehearsal studio and lie recording facility in Ronkonkoma. This facility will soon at 24-track recording featuring ProTools, and has two rooms available for demo recording and rehearsals.
